TDIU — Total Disability Individual Unemployability
A VA benefit that allows a veteran with less than 100% combined disability rating to receive compensation at the 100% rate if service-connected disabilities prevent substantially gainful employment.
Vocational Expert (VE)
A professional who evaluates a claimant's occupational history, transferable skills, residual functional capacity, and labor market conditions to provide expert opinions on employability.
Transferable Skills Analysis (TSA)
An evaluation of the skills acquired in a veteran's prior work experience and whether those skills can be applied to other occupations given current functional limitations.
Residual Functional Capacity (RFC)
The maximum amount of work-related activity a claimant can perform despite their service-connected or medical limitations — a key factor in both VA and SSA disability determinations.
Sedentary Work
Work that involves lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and involves sitting most of the day. Under SSA guidelines, the ability to perform sedentary work can affect disability determinations significantly.
Substantially Gainful Employment (SGE)
Employment that provides income above the poverty threshold for a single individual. For TDIU eligibility, a veteran must be unable to maintain substantially gainful employment due to service-connected disabilities.
DOT / O*NET
The Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) and its modern successor O*NET are occupational classification systems used by vocational experts to identify job demands and skill requirements across thousands of occupations.
Marginal Employment
Employment in a protected work environment (e.g., a family business) or employment earning below the poverty threshold. Marginal employment does not disqualify a veteran from TDIU eligibility.
